June 24 - Hearing and Seeing

Hearing and seeing are the two very important sensory abilities for us to interact with our environment, without them, we would be shut into our own world of darkness. This is not only true for our physical being but also for our spiritual being. Our spiritual sensitivities in the forms of hearing and seeing are keys to the spiritual environment around us. Through our spiritual senses of hearing and seeing, we interact with spirit beings. Our spiritual ears and eyes are to be open all the time in order for us to live and move not only in the physical world but also in the spirit world.

Elisha’s greatness lies in his ability to hear and see in the spirit realm, not just in the physical realm. He was not only able to hear God and listen to Him for His Word and instructions, he was also able to listen to what was happening in the Syrian court. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, he was able to warn the king of Israel about the traps of the Syrian army. When the king of Syria was baffled about it and suspected that some of his servants might be betraying him, one of them said, “None, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.” The reason why Elisha knew about what the Syrian king had spoken in his bedroom was through the revelation of the Holy Spirit who can reveal to us the unknown so that we might gain wisdom and discernment.

The other spiritual sensitivity that many others, like his own servant, did not have is the spiritual sight. When the Syrian king sent a great army to Dothan to arrest Elisha, Elisha’s servant only saw the physical reality: an army of horses and chariots was all around the city. With mere physical sight, the servant was disheartened and fearful, he needed to have spiritual sight and see what the Lord was also doing. Elisha, who saw also the spiritual reality, said, “Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” Having said that, Elisha asked God to open the spiritual eyes of his servant and he saw the mountain full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

The winning strategy of Elisha was the ability to hear and see in the spirit and also asking God to confuse his enemies by blindness and by hearing the wrong noises. When you are not in tune with God, not able to hear His voice or not able to see into the spirit realm, you would be hearing other voices and you would be blinded to spiritual realities. This is how defeat comes in your life: when you fail to hear and see in the spirit.

Are you hearing God? Do you have spiritual sight? How is your relationship with God? Ask God for His gifts of hearing and seeing into the spirit realm now.
